Just Dicta
You can make our job easier (and reduce the cost of the transcripts considerably) by using good quality tapes, microphones and recorders. Just Dicta Recording Tips - Make your recordings as clear as possible.
- Ask your subject to speak up if needed.
- Record in a QUIET place. Check for background noises such as traffic, air conditioners, fans, music, background conversation.
- Be aware of noises such as: rustling papers, coughing, clinking of glasses, tapping on table, etc. These sounds all interfere with clear transcription.
- Use brand-name tapes - they are less likely to jam, distort voices or break.
- Use an adapter instead of batteries for your recorder. If you must use batteries, make sure they are fresh to avoid fluctuations in recording speed and volume.
- Always use an external microphone. If possible use an individual microphone for each person, especially in focus groups.
- Send us your original tapes, not copies.
- Place the microphone as close to the sound source as possible. Since the answers are almost always more important than the questions, the recording microphone has to be placed as close as possible to the person being interviewed.
- If using cassettes, never use the slow recording speed to fit more on the tape. You will be reducing the quality by at least 50% which will increase transcription time.
